Medium: How to Successfully Step into the Unknown…

… without getting ass-f#*ked by Life in the process.

Become comfortable in the realm of the unknown because that’s where miracles happen. — Unknown

Many of us are living lives that are less than what we consider to be ‘ideal’ for ourselves. Whether it be that we are unhappy with our chosen careers, or something closer to home like feeling unappreciated in our personal relationships, whatever the case may be, the fact of the matter is that each of us is solely responsible for our lives and the experiences we choose.

If you have lived a life directed by others, regaining control (if you ever really had it in the first place) will be the most daunting thing imaginable. Why? Probably because you never really exerted control over your decision-making and the decisions you implemented were to make others — as opposed to yourself — happy.

This is what “stepping into the unknown” really means. It means unlearning things that do not resonate with your personal ethics and morals (once you have decided what these are) and taking the first step in a radical journey of self-discovery.

Why is this journey radical? Well, for two reasons. First, discovering who you truly are and living authentically from that place may upset those around you, especially those who invested in you continuing to live to please others — and I hate to break it to you, but those will be the people that will put up the biggest resistance. If these individuals are powerful and influential, my heart goes out to you, but I encourage you to continue on your journey because you are worth it.

The wonderful thing about this is that you will begin to see people for who they truly are — and, more importantly, what they are not.

If someone truly loves you and cares for your wellbeing, they would have encouraged you to live from a place of authenticity from the very beginning.

Secondly, this journey is radical because you’ll discover once you decide to truly and honestly know yourself, you will have to be prepared for anything and everything. As I sit here writing this, I’m chuckling to myself because, as much as I write this for my readers, I write this for myself as well.

I started on my own journey at the beginning of 2022 and it has been a marvellously scary, but rewarding, rollercoaster of a ride. What has my reward been? Clarity of mind and of purpose – something I do not think I have never experienced like this before – and it is from this newfound emotional and mental foundation that I build a life that I can be proud of.

So, to conclude, step into the unknown with humility, grace, a sense of humor and clarity of mind with regards to who you are, what your values are, and what your purpose is. Go with the flow, turning every experience into a positive (trust me, it’s possible… and an extremely valuable skill to have), and, lastly, remember to always leave a place or someone better off than when you found it.
